When Motivation Isn't Enough: How to Get Off the Couch Anyway

Jul 15, 2026

We've all been there.

You wake up with every intention of working out. You even lay your workout clothes out the night before. But then the morning comes...

You're tired.

The couch looks comfortable.

You tell yourself you'll start tomorrow.

Sound familiar?

Here's the truth that most people don't want to hear:

Motivation is a terrible long-term strategy.

If motivation were enough, we'd all exercise every day, eat our vegetables, drink enough water, and get eight hours of sleep. But life doesn't work that way. Motivation comes and goes. Some days it's loud. Most days it's nowhere to be found.

"But Cat, You're in the Fitness Industry..."

One of the things people say to me all the time is, "Well, you're a fitness professional. It must be easy for you. You must wake up motivated every day."

I wish that were true!

The reality is, I'm human just like everyone else. There are mornings when I'd rather stay in bed, afternoons when the couch sounds more appealing than the gym, and days when life feels heavy. Being in the fitness industry doesn't give me a magical supply of motivation. What it has given me is the understanding that motivation isn't what gets me moving—commitment does.

I don't work out because I'm always excited to exercise.

I work out because I want to keep moving the way I want to move. I want to hike, travel, lift my suitcase into an overhead bin, play with my family, and confidently get down on the floor—and back up again—as I continue to age.

I also exercise because every workout is an investment in my health. I'm not chasing perfection or trying to earn my food. I'm building strength, protecting my bones, supporting my heart, keeping my mind sharp, and giving myself the best chance to enjoy a long, active, independent life.

That's what gets me off the couch—not motivation, but purpose.

The Biggest Myth in Fitness

One of the biggest myths is believing you'll magically feel like exercising.

You probably won't.

Even after more than 40 years in the fitness industry, I still have days when I'd rather stay in my pajamas. The difference isn't that I'm more motivated—it's that I've learned not to wait for motivation to show up.

I show up first.

Action Creates Motivation—Not the Other Way Around

Most people think the formula is:

Motivation → Action → Results

In reality, it usually looks like this:

Action → Momentum → Motivation → Results

Once you start moving, your brain begins to change.

Your body warms up.

Your energy improves.

Your mood shifts.

Before you know it, you're glad you got started.

The hardest part is almost always the first five minutes.

Stop Making It All or Nothing

One reason people stay on the couch is because they've convinced themselves they need an hour-long workout for it to count.

Who made that rule?

If you only have 10 minutes...

Move for 10 minutes.

If all you can do today is walk around the block...

Walk around the block.

If you can do five squats while your coffee is brewing...

That's a win.

Small actions repeated consistently beat occasional perfect workouts every single time.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You

Every workout is a vote for the person you're becoming.

You're not just exercising to lose weight.

You're building stronger bones.

You're protecting your heart.

You're preserving muscle.

You're improving balance.

You're giving yourself the ability to keep doing the things you love for years to come.

Fitness isn't punishment.

It's freedom.

It's the freedom to move your body the way you want, for as long as you can.

It's preparation for living well.

Stop Negotiating With Yourself

Your brain is an expert negotiator.

"You deserve a break."

"You've had a stressful day."

"You can start Monday."

"You'll do two workouts tomorrow."

Sound familiar?

The more you negotiate, the less likely you are to move.

Instead, make movement non-negotiable—just like brushing your teeth.

You don't debate whether you're in the mood to brush your teeth.

You simply do it.

Movement deserves the same level of commitment.

Make It Ridiculously Easy

Success isn't about having more willpower.

It's about removing obstacles.

Keep your shoes by the door.

Schedule your workouts like appointments.

Find movement you actually enjoy.

Have a backup plan for busy days.

The easier you make it to start, the more likely you'll keep going.

Remember Your "Why"

On the days when motivation disappears, your reason has to be bigger than your excuses.

Maybe it's your grandchildren.

Maybe it's traveling without limitations.

Maybe it's getting off the floor without struggling.

Maybe it's simply wanting to feel strong, capable, and confident in your own body.

Whatever your reason is...

Keep it front and center.

Because your "why" will carry you long after motivation has packed its bags.

Final Thoughts

Here's what I want you to remember:

You don't have to feel motivated to begin.

You only have to begin.

One step.

One stretch.

One walk.

One workout.

Don't wait for motivation to knock on your door. Build habits that carry you when motivation is nowhere to be found.

Because the goal isn't to love every workout.

The goal is to create a body that allows you to live the life you want.

So today, don't wait until you feel like it.

Stand up.

Move your body.

Your future self will thank you for every single step you take.

YOU are Freaking Fabulous!!
