Why Knowing Exercise Is Good For You Still Isn't Enough

Aug 05, 2026

You Know What To Do...So Why Aren't You Doing It?

Let's have a little heart-to-heart.

You know strength training is important.

You know cardio is good for your heart.

You know movement helps you stay strong, independent, and capable as you get older.

You know exercise can improve your energy, your mood, your sleep, your balance, and the way you feel in your own body.

So why is it that so many of us still struggle to actually do the thing we KNOW is good for us?

Trust me, this is a question I hear all the time.

And after more than 40 years in the fitness industry, I've learned something very important:

The problem usually isn't that people don't know what to do.

The problem is that knowing and doing are two completely different things.

Even I Have My Own "I Know Better" Moments

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Even after more than 40 years in the fitness industry, I'm not perfect.

Yep...I said it.

Here's my confession:

I hate taking pills.

Not because I don't believe vitamins are important.

Not because I don't know they can support my health.

I simply don't like swallowing pills.

So what did I do?

For the longest time...I avoided taking my vitamins.

Sound familiar?

Isn't it interesting how we'll avoid doing something that's good for us simply because we don't like the way we have to do it?

One day, I finally asked myself a different question.

Instead of saying, "Why can't I just take my vitamins?" I asked, "What's getting in my way?"

The answer was simple.

It wasn't the vitamins.

It was the pills.

So I made a change.

I switched to liquid vitamins.

Guess what?

I'm doing so much better.

Do I still miss a day here and there?

Absolutely.

Some weeks I still skip a couple of days.

But here's the difference:

I'm no longer missing weeks or months because I found a solution that works for me.

And isn't that what healthy living is really about?

It's not about being perfect.

It's about making progress.

Sometimes we think the answer is to try harder.

Often, the better answer is to make the healthy choice easier.

The goal is to find a way to move, nourish, and care for your body that fits your life.

Because when you stop fighting yourself and start working with yourself, consistency becomes a whole lot easier.

Your Brain Is Not Always Your Best Fitness Partner

Here's the funny thing about the human brain.

It is brilliant.

It keeps us alive.

It helps us solve problems.

It protects us.

But when it comes to exercise?

Sometimes your brain is that friend who always has an excuse ready.

"Let's start tomorrow."

"You've had a long day. You deserve to relax."

"Maybe after vacation."

"Maybe when things calm down."

Sound familiar?

The truth is, your brain likes comfortable.

Your brain likes familiar.

Your brain likes easy.

And let's be honest...sitting on the couch scrolling through your phone feels a whole lot easier than putting on your sneakers and lifting weights.

But here's where we have to challenge ourselves.

Easy today doesn't always create the life we want tomorrow.

Motivation Is Not Your Magic Wand

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

"I just need to get motivated."

Here's the thing...

Motivation is wonderful when it shows up.

But motivation is also a little flaky.

Some days it's there.

Some days it disappears faster than cookies at a family gathering.

(You know what I'm talking about!)

If we only exercised when we felt motivated, most of us wouldn't move very often.

The people who create lasting change aren't necessarily more motivated than everyone else.

They simply made a decision:

Movement is no longer something they negotiate with themselves about.

It became part of their life.

Just like brushing their teeth.

Just like drinking their morning coffee.

Just like taking care of the responsibilities they value.

The Real Reason Many People Don't Start

Let's talk about something else that doesn't get enough attention:

Fear.

Yes, fear.

People are afraid.

They're afraid they won't know what to do.

They're afraid they'll look silly.

They're afraid they won't be able to keep up.

They're afraid because they remember what they used to be able to do, and their body isn't where it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago.

But let me remind you of something:

Your body does not need you to be who you were.

Your body needs you to take care of who you are today.

The person who starts with a 10-minute walk is winning.

The person who picks up a pair of dumbbells twice a week is winning.

The person who chooses to move instead of staying stuck is winning.

Progress doesn't come from doing everything perfectly.

Progress comes from doing something consistently.

Stop Waiting For The Perfect Time

Can I tell you something?

There is no magical day when life suddenly becomes less busy.

There will always be something.

Work.

Family.

Appointments.

Stress.

Responsibilities.

Life.

If you wait until everything is perfect, you will spend a lot of time waiting.

Instead, ask yourself:

"What is one thing I can do today to take care of my future self?"

Maybe it's:

Taking a walk.

Doing some strength exercises.

Stretching before bed.

Standing up more throughout the day.

Joining a community where someone will hold you accountable.

Small things matter.

Don't underestimate the power of small things.

Small things done consistently create big changes.

You Have To Stop Seeing Exercise As Punishment

This one is important.

Somewhere along the way, many of us started thinking exercise was something we had to do because we weren't good enough.

Lose weight.

Fix our body.

Make up for what we ate.

Earn our food.

Nope.

That is not the relationship I want you to have with movement.

Movement is a gift.

Your body has carried you through every season of your life.

It carried you through your successes.

Your struggles.

Your celebrations.

Your heartbreaks.

Your adventures.

Your busy seasons.

Your quiet seasons.

Exercise isn't punishment for what your body isn't.

Movement is gratitude for what your body is.

The Question Isn't "Do You Know What To Do?"

Most people know.

You know you should move.

You know you should build strength.

You know you should take care of your health.

The real question is:

"Are you willing to take one small action today?"

Not tomorrow.

Not Monday.

Not when you lose weight.

Not when you have more time.

Today.

Because your future self is counting on the choices you make right now.

A Little Cattitude Before You Go...

Listen, my friend...

You do not need another fitness article.

You do not need another saved workout video sitting on your phone.

You do not need another promise that "next week will be different."

You need action.

One walk.

One workout.

One choice that says:

"My health matters."

Because the goal isn't to become someone else.

The goal is to become the strongest, healthiest, most confident version of yourself.

The person who keeps showing up.

The person who refuses to give up.

The person who believes they are worth the effort.

Your body isn't asking for perfection.

It is asking for attention.

It is asking for movement.

So put on those sneakers, pick up those weights, and let's get moving.

Because remember...

Movement is medicine.
Health is freedom.
And the best workout is the one you actually do.
